How a 120-Year-Old Company is Climbing the Ranks of the Most Sustainable Organizations

Ingredion has made remarkable progress in its sustainability journey and the results are being noticed. Recently, Barron's esteemed list of the 100 Most Sustainable U.S. Companies recognized Ingredion, jumping from #63 to #33 in the rankings in just one year. Additionally, USA TODAY has recognized Ingredion as one of America’s Climate Leaders of 2025, affirming its impressive environmental performance. Both accolades stem, in part, from the Company's transparency in reporting on key sustainability measures such as the findings from the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP).

Brian Nash, vice president of corporate sustainability at Ingredion, said that the Company's rise in rankings likely result from a combination of data-driven transparency and a cultural mindset that encourages supporting sustainability.

“At Ingredion, we talk about our ‘Care First’ culture, which means that we empower employees at all levels to a take an active role in caring for our people and the communities where we operate. That combined with specific, regular reporting on dozens of sustainability-focused metrics create a working environment where continuously improving sustainability results can occur.”

When it comes to transparency, Ingredion has made significant advancements against multiple sustainability goals. In the past year, Ingredion has reported:

  • A 21% absolute reduction in global scope 1 and 2 emissions vs 2019 baseline
  • An impressive 85% achievement in sustainable sourcing for our tier 1 priority crops
  • An estimated 74K acres under regenerative agriculture programs

“These recognitions support the Company's strategic direction and efforts in sustainability and serve as a testament to its dedication and progress in this area,” Nash stated. "They underscore the Company's continuing efforts in sustainability, setting a new standard for environmental excellence and innovative practices within the industry."Balsa Nova Biomass

The Company has several key initiatives for the coming year including exiting coal usage at its Winston-Salem manufacturing facility by the end of 2025, following the successful removal of coal boilers in Brazil and Pakistan. Additionally, the Company’s innovative approach shines through projects such as Fibertex—functional fibers crafted from upcycled citrus peels—demonstrating a commitment to sustainable innovation.

As Ingredion gears up to unveil more comprehensive sustainability metrics in its forthcoming sustainability report, it remains focused on upholding its path of environmental excellence. This report, scheduled for release ahead of the annual shareholder meeting in May, will offer deeper insights into the Company's accomplishments and future ambitions.
